Major Renovation Underway at Zagreb's Historic Kino Europa

Behind the seemingly unchanged facade of Zagreb's beloved Kino Europa, a massive and intricate construction site is buzzing with activity. The iconic cinema, which has been closed to the public for seven years, is undergoing a significant renovation, with workers and machinery filling its interior.

City officials confirm that the extensive works are proceeding according to schedule. Currently, the most demanding phase involves the main hall, where the seating has been removed. Excavation and partial demolition of the floor slab are in progress to accommodate entirely new installations, with materials being transported off-site daily. Simultaneously, restorers are meticulously working on preserving the building's statues and rich decorative elements, while structural reinforcement of the southern gable wall is also underway.

Following the current phase, the project will move into finishing works, interior decoration, and final outfitting. The renovation officially commenced in mid-February, with an estimated completion date by the end of 2027. The total cost of the project is €11 million, with approximately €6 million being financed by European Union funds.

The path to renovation was lengthy, beginning with years of resolving property rights issues. The Zagreb earthquake further complicated matters, necessitating extensive structural repairs. Organizing the construction site within the narrow Varšavska Street, including the placement of cranes, presented additional logistical challenges.

Kino Europa, originally opened as Balkan-Palace in 1925, was once one of the most modern cinemas of its time. Designed by architect Srećko Florschütz, its grand hall and opulent interior reflected contemporary European architectural trends. It remained a central cultural hub for decades, evolving through silent films with live accompaniment to the first sound features. After changing its name to Kino Europa in the early 1990s, the city of Zagreb acquired ownership in 2007, with the Zagreb Film Festival taking over management. It subsequently became a focal point for independent and European cinema in Croatia, hosting major festivals.
