Majority of Americans oppose US military action against Iran: poll

Opposition to the US military campaign against Iran has reached its highest level in six months, according to a new poll. Fifty-four percent of Americans said they opposed the action, while 39% supported it.

The resistance was strongest among independent voters, 66% of whom opposed the campaign. Overall, 58% of respondents said the war with Iran had not been worth it, including 41% who strongly held that view. The share expressing that opinion rose eight points from April, when it stood at 50%. Only 34% said the war had been worth it.

The survey also showed a shift in whom Americans trust to handle the conflict. Democrats led Trump and Republicans by four percentage points, with 36% trusting Democrats compared with 32% choosing Trump and the Republicans. In March, shortly after the conflict began, Trump and Republicans held an eight-point advantage, 39% to 31%.

The findings follow a separate Reuters/Ipsos poll that showed Trump’s approval rating at 33%, the lowest of his presidency, while 64% disapproved of his performance. That poll found 80% of Americans, including 87% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans, believed US involvement in Iran would last an extended period. Only 16% expected the conflict to end within a few weeks.

Global Strategy Group conducted the online survey for Navigator Research among 1,166 US adults nationwide. Its margin of error was three percentage points in either direction.
