Makassar Hosts National Quran Recitation Event, Expects Economic Boost

Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi, has officially opened the 8th National KORPRI Civil Servants' Recitation of the Quran (MTQ) at Karebosi Field on Monday evening. The opening ceremony was led by the Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, following a parade of delegations from different provinces, ministries, and institutions.

Makassar is hosting this prestigious national event for the second time, having previously served as the venue in the event's inaugural year. This year's MTQ VIII KORPRI Nasional 2026 has attracted 117 delegations, comprising representatives from 38 provinces and 79 from various ministries and institutions, totaling approximately 1,157 participants. The opening featured performances blending religious themes, culture, and local wisdom of South Sulawesi, captivating thousands of attendees.

Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin expressed his pride and optimism regarding the city's role as host. He views the trust placed in Makassar as an acknowledgment of its readiness to host national-scale events. "This is a trust for Makassar City to be the host of MTQ KORPRI. This is a blessing for the people of Makassar City who are trusted to be the host," he stated.

Beyond the spiritual and cultural significance, Mayor Arifuddin highlighted the substantial economic impact expected from the influx of participants and visitors. He estimates that the approximately 2,000 attendees, including reciters, delegates, and accompanying staff, will stimulate economic activity across various sectors. "Less than 2,000 participants, guests coming from qori and qariah, delegations coming as envoys from various regions and institutions attending for the MTQ event have an impact on economic circulation. Of course, this is a very big blessing for the people of Makassar City," he added. The mayor anticipates that the event will serve as a new economic magnet, benefiting small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM), culinary businesses, hotels, and tourism, thereby fostering economic growth alongside religious devotion.
