Makinde vows safer schools amid rising security concerns

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his administration's dedication to making schools across the state secure environments, stating that the safety of children and teachers is paramount and non-negotiable amid rising national security concerns.

Speaking at a seminar on "Building Resilient Schools: Strengthening Operational Capacity for Safety, Security and Child Protection in Oyo State Educational Institutions," Makinde highlighted the imperative for stakeholders to reassess and adapt their strategies for safeguarding educational spaces. The seminar was organized by the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in conjunction with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Represented by Akin Oyedele, Head of Operations at the Oyo State Security Trust Fund, the governor stressed that his administration is making significant investments to prevent schools from becoming easy targets for criminals. He urged security agencies, non-state actors, schools, and communities to actively implement the seminar's resolutions, fostering rapid response and enhanced collaboration with the government.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, represented by Permanent Secretary Mrs Bamidele Oyinloye, called for comprehensive stakeholder involvement, emphasizing that safety must be addressed both within and outside school premises. Augustine Padonu, Oyo State Commandant of the NSCDC, represented by Deputy Commandant Timothy Patunola, identified common school vulnerabilities, including inadequate fencing, unrestricted access, poor security awareness, insufficient emergency preparedness, and weak communication channels with security agencies.
