Malaysia Offers Condolences to Nepal, China After Devastating Floods; 55 Citizens Unaccounted For

Malaysia has conveyed its deepest sympathies to Nepal and China in the wake of catastrophic flash floods that have struck the border region. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu is collaborating with local authorities to provide assistance to all those affected, including Malaysian nationals caught in the disaster.

I am deeply distressed by the catastrophic flash floods that have struck the Nepal-China border region.

Anwar confirmed that Malaysian government resources are being mobilized to support the ongoing efforts. He expressed deep distress over the "catastrophic flash floods" and assured that the government would remain fully engaged until all affected Malaysians are accounted for and their families receive necessary support. The Prime Minister specifically highlighted the concern that 55 Malaysians have yet to be contacted, prompting active efforts to locate them and ascertain their condition.

Malaysia extends its deepest condolences to the Governments and peoples of Nepal and China, and to all those who have lost loved ones or await news of missing relatives.

The Prime Minister also commended the search and rescue teams working under extremely challenging circumstances. "I commend the courage and dedication of the search and rescue personnel working under extraordinarily difficult conditions," he stated, emphasizing that "Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected."

I have directed that our mission be provided with every resource it needs. The government will remain fully engaged until the affected Malaysians are accounted for and their families have the support they need.

Reports indicate that the massive flooding, triggered by an avalanche in the snowy mountains, has resulted in significant casualties, with at least 95 people confirmed dead in Nepal. Hundreds of tourists, including Americans, Indians, an Australian, Britons, and Malaysians, remain unaccounted for. Images from the scene depict the destructive power of the floodwaters, which swept away houses and buildings, leaving a trail of devastation.

I am also deeply concerned after being informed by the Foreign Ministry that 55 Malaysians have yet to be contacted so far, and efforts to locate them and obtain updates on their condition are actively under way.
