Malaysia's PM Anwar Ibrahim Clarifies Taiwan Stance, Emphasizing Peaceful Resolution

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has clarified his remarks on Taiwan, emphasizing that peaceful resolution is the optimal path for addressing disputes. Following controversy over his earlier comments, which drew parallels between Taiwan and Malaysia's internal states seeking to leave the federation, Ibrahim stressed Malaysia's respect for China's position on Taiwan.

"Malaysia respects China's position on the Taiwan issue, but believes that peaceful resolution is the best way to resolve any dispute," Ibrahim stated at a recent event. He reaffirmed Malaysia's long-standing "One China" policy, which has been consistent since the tenure of the second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak. Ibrahim acknowledged that his previous phrasing in an interview with Al Jazeera might have caused negative reactions.

The Prime Minister's clarification came after the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia asserted Taiwan's status as a sovereign and independent nation, distinct from the People's Republic of China.
