Mamdani launches mural project in New York to celebrate 2026 World Cup

New York City is gearing up for the 2026 World Cup with a vibrant cultural initiative led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In collaboration with the project Groundswell, the city will see 12 artistic murals painted across its five boroughs, transforming public spaces into canvases for community expression.

The initiative seeks to leave a lasting legacy of the global sporting event by engaging residents in the creative process. Young artists and diverse community members will design and paint the murals, with opportunities for New Yorkers of all ages to participate in collective painting sessions. This approach aims to foster a deeper sense of belonging and reflect the unique identity of the city's neighborhoods.

"These murals will belong to the neighborhoods that gave them life, from Fordham Heights to Ocean Hill, passing through Laurelton and other communities in our city," Mayor Mamdani stated. He emphasized that public art strengthens community ties and mirrors the spirit of residents who consider their areas home.

The murals will be strategically located throughout the city, ensuring broad representation. The announcement coincides with the lead-up to the World Cup final, scheduled for July 19, 2026, at the New York/New Jersey Stadium. The final match will kick off at 3 p.m. ET, with broadcast details to be announced by FIFA.
