Man arrested for creating AI-generated fake news about Gwangju Uprising linked to North Korea

South Korean police have arrested a man in his 20s for allegedly creating and spreading fake newspaper images that distorted the May 18th Gwangju Uprising. The fabricated images falsely claimed the historic pro-democracy movement was a North Korean-backed operation.

Authorities reported that the suspect used an AI application to generate images mimicking the Gwangju Ilbo newspaper. One such image, titled "May 18th, Spies Sent from the North Stole Armories, Indiscriminate Attack on Martial Law Army," was posted on his social media account on May 18th. The fake article was designed to appear as if it were from the May 20th, 1980 edition of the newspaper.

In total, six people were arrested in connection with the case. This includes the primary creator of the fake news and five others, including a woman in her 50s, who allegedly re-shared the images on social media. The primary suspect faces charges related to violating a special law concerning the May 18th Uprising, defamation, and obstruction of business. The arrests highlight ongoing efforts to combat the spread of disinformation surrounding the significant historical event.
