Man arrested for setting fire to trash container in Buenos Aires, ordered into preventive detention

A man in Buenos Aires faces preventive detention after allegedly setting a public trash container ablaze, creating a potentially dangerous scene in the Parque Chacabuco neighborhood.

The incident occurred on Avenida La Plata, where the fire quickly intensified, posing a risk to a nearby parked car, a tree, and the windows of an adjacent building. Surveillance cameras from the Urban Monitoring Center (CMU) captured the moment a man approached the container and ignited it.

Following the incident, police were dispatched and, guided by CMU operators who maintained visual contact via cameras, intercepted the suspect a few blocks away. He was arrested and subsequently charged with "intentional arson with common danger to property."

Investigators noted that the fire's magnitude raised concerns about its potential to spread. The suspect's legal situation was further complicated by prior criminal records related to drug offenses, which were considered during the judicial decision to detain him preventively as the investigation proceeds.
