Man Arrested for Setting Neighbor's Hay on Fire in Serbia; Millions in Damages

Authorities in Topola, Serbia, have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of intentionally starting a fire that destroyed his neighbor's hay and agricultural equipment. The incident caused significant material damage, estimated at around 12 million Serbian dinars (approximately $110,000 USD).

The suspect, identified by initials D.M., was detained for up to 48 hours following the order of the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office. Police in Topola, under the authority of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, are investigating the case. The fire reportedly began on July 18, 2026, when D.M. allegedly set fire to hay stored in a haystack on his neighbor's property.

The blaze quickly spread, engulfing and destroying essential agricultural machinery and equipment. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but initial estimates place the loss at 12 million dinars. D.M. is suspected of committing a serious offense against public safety.

Following the investigation and the filing of criminal charges, the suspect will be brought before the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Aranđelovac. The incident highlights the severe consequences of arson, particularly in rural communities where agricultural machinery is vital for livelihoods.
