Man Charged After Bomb Threat Against U.S. Consulate in Halifax

A man has been charged following a bomb threat that targeted the U.S. Consulate in Halifax, prompting a significant police response and evacuations. The incident began Sunday evening when police were alerted to the threat against the consulate, located in Purdy’s Wharf on Upper Water Street.

Authorities identified a suspect and launched an investigation. On Monday morning, police located the suspect's vehicle in the Purdy’s Wharf parkade. Members of the explosives disposal unit were called to the scene after a propane tank and containers of flammable liquid were observed inside the vehicle. A suspicious bag was also found nearby, leading police to evacuate several downtown streets.

Halifax Regional Police announced Tuesday that 54-year-old Ali Assakereh has been charged with uttering threats and public mischief. Assakereh was apprehended later Monday morning, approximately 10 kilometers away from the consulate, and was being interviewed by police. The evacuation order was lifted by Monday afternoon, and roads reopened.

Police have stated that the incident is not being considered a national security matter.
