Man charged in Sonora for machete attack that severed victim's nose and lip

Authorities in Sonora, Mexico, have arrested and charged a 41-year-old man, identified as Gilberto “N,” for his alleged involvement in a brutal attack that resulted in the amputation of a 27-year-old victim's nose and upper lip. The incident occurred on May 9, 2026, in San Luis Río Colorado.

Gilberto “N”, was presented before a judge for his probable responsibility in the crime of qualified homicide with treachery and advantage in the attempted degree, committed to the detriment of a 27-year-old man.

The Sonora State Attorney General's Office (FGJE) stated that Gilberto “N” and another individual allegedly ambushed the victim while armed with machetes. The attack was described as a joint assault, leaving the victim defenseless. The severe injuries sustained include the loss of his nose and upper lip, exposure of the buccal mucosa, and damage to his front teeth, in addition to lacerations on his left hand and other injuries to his lower back and right shoulder.

Medical evaluations indicate that the victim's injuries are life-threatening, will take more than 15 days to heal, and will leave permanent, noticeable scarring. The FGJE has affirmed its commitment to a comprehensive investigation into acts that threaten individuals' lives and integrity. The office pledged to bring those responsible to justice while upholding due process, human rights, and the presumption of innocence for the accused.

As a consequence of the aggression, the victim suffered amputation of the nose and upper lip, with exposure of the buccal mucosa and absence of frontal dental pieces, in addition to lacerating wounds on the left hand and multiple injuries in the lumbar and right shoulder regions.

The prosecution has formally linked Gilberto “N” to the charges of qualified homicide with treachery and advantage, in the attempted degree, committed against the 27-year-old victim. The investigation aims to ensure the victim receives effective access to justice.
