Man charged with assault resulting in death after station attack

More than a year after a fatal altercation at Ellwangen station, a 33-year-old man faces charges of assault resulting in death. The incident occurred on April 16 of the previous year, stemming from a dispute between the accused and a 59-year-old victim.

According to the Ellwangen Regional Court, the conflict began when the victim confronted the accused for crossing a closed railway crossing. The situation quickly escalated to physical violence. Prosecutors allege that the accused first slapped the victim in the face and then forcefully pushed him to the ground.

The victim fell, striking his head near the edge of the railway tracks. He was subsequently hospitalized, where he succumbed to his injuries days later. A police autopsy confirmed that severe head trauma, consistent with the fall, was the cause of death. The court noted the victim suffered a skull fracture and a life-threatening brain hemorrhage.

Witnesses had reportedly noticed the 33-year-old behaving erratically and appearing heavily intoxicated on a train en route to Ellwangen. No trial dates have yet been set for the main hearing.
