Man Charged with Murder After Causing Paralysis and Death in Debt Collection Incident

A man in Taiwan faces murder charges after a violent confrontation during a debt collection attempt resulted in the victim's paralysis and subsequent death. The incident, which occurred on November 7, 2023, began when the accused, identified by his surname Chen, arranged to meet the victim, surnamed Wu, to discuss a debt.

Wu arrived at the meeting point with a friend, Zhao, and realized Chen had brought several associates. Fearing the situation, Wu attempted to leave and head to a police station. However, Chen allegedly pursued Wu and deliberately rammed his car into Wu's vehicle, causing it to crash into a roadside tree.

The impact left Wu with severe injuries, including a fractured neck, spinal cord damage, and respiratory failure, leading to paralysis and dependence on a ventilator. Despite surviving for over a year, Wu passed away in April of the following year. Chen was initially indicted for attempted murder in late 2024.

Following Wu's death, the Taoyuan District Prosecutor's Office has reclassified the charges to murder. The case has now been transferred to the Taoyuan District Court for trial by a jury. Chen is currently detained, and his detention has been extended for another two months.
