Man detained in Panama for murder of former political candidate

A man in Panama City faces provisional detention after being charged in connection with the aggravated homicide of Jesús Alemán, a former candidate for representative in Juan Díaz. Alemán was killed on March 29, 2026, while participating in a sporting event at a synthetic field in Ciudad Radial.

The incident occurred when several individuals reportedly exited a vehicle and opened fire on attendees. Alemán sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Other individuals were also injured in the attack.

The suspect was arrested during "Operation Contragolpe" following a search operation in the Concepción sector, conducted by the specialized homicide and femicide section of the Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office in conjunction with judicial investigation units. Evidence related to the investigation was reportedly found during the procedure.

A judge ordered the provisional detention, citing risks of flight, evidence tampering, and danger to the community and victim's family. The Public Ministry stated it will continue investigating to identify any other individuals involved in the crime. The suspect faces charges of aggravated homicide, attempted homicide, and criminal association.
