Man dies after police operation; officers, paramedics investigated

Authorities are investigating six police officers and two paramedics in connection with the death of a 37-year-old man who lost consciousness during a police operation in Duisburg. The man subsequently died in the hospital, and an autopsy indicated hypoxia, or reduced oxygen supply, as the likely cause of death.

The incident occurred in mid-July when police were called to an apartment where the man was reportedly shouting and acting erratically in a bathroom. Officers restrained him with handcuffs and leg shackles, citing self-protection and his own safety. Emergency medical services were also called to the scene.

Although the man was resuscitated at the scene, he later died. Investigators are exploring various factors, including the possibility of intoxication, as mentioned in earlier reports. A key aspect of the investigation is determining whether the man's death is linked to the fact that he was restrained in a prone position.

Six police officers are being investigated on suspicion of bodily harm resulting in death. The two paramedics face similar suspicion, but for causing death by omission. The duration of the ongoing investigation has not yet been disclosed by the Duisburg public prosecutor's office.
