Man dies in truck crash on notorious road with vehicle restrictions

A fatal truck crash on the notorious Jamberoo Mountain Road has reignited urgent calls for the New South Wales government to fund significant safety improvements. The incident occurred south of Wollongong, where a man in his 20s lost his life.

The two gentleman that survived had very serious injuries, indicated by the two aeromedical helicopters sent to retrieve them.

Jamberoo Mountain Road is known for its winding, hazardous terrain, featuring numerous hairpin turns. It serves as a crucial link between the Southern Highlands and the South Coast. Vehicle restrictions are posted at its entrance, banning vehicles over 10 meters long or weighing more than 12 tonnes.

It's also very unfortunate that we've had a recent similar incident on a similar part of the road.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday to find a "heavy, rigid truck" had rolled off the road and landed on its roof. While paramedics treated the survivor, a passenger believed to be in his 20s, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and another passenger, also in their 20s, sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to separate hospitals.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young man who has lost his life in this tragic accident. We're hoping the other two in the accident make a full recovery.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, including whether the truck was permitted on the road. This fatality follows another truck crash on the same road less than a month ago. In 2005, a bus crash on Jamberoo Mountain Road resulted in two deaths and injured 20 people. Local officials expressed condolences and reiterated the need for upgrades, noting that councils responsible for the road struggle with maintenance costs.
