Man Faces 7-Year Sentence Request for Allegedly Setting Nephew on Fire Over Inheritance Dispute

Prosecutors have requested a seven-year prison sentence for a man in his 50s charged with attempted murder after allegedly setting his nephew on fire.

The trial is underway at the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Court. The prosecution is seeking the sentence for charges including attempted murder. The suspect, identified as A, was arrested and indicted on these charges. The court is currently hearing the case.

According to the indictment, A poured gasoline on his nephew, B, at his home in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, on December 13 last year and set him on fire. The investigation revealed that the motive behind the alleged attack was a conflict over inheritance issues with the nephew's family.

I had no intention to kill, and the attempted murder charge cannot be accepted. The charge was applied using a lighter that did not exist as evidence during the investigation and prosecution.

During the final hearing, A's defense lawyer argued for acquittal on the attempted murder charge, citing insufficient proof. However, the lawyer requested leniency for the arson charge, highlighting A's remorse. A himself maintained his innocence regarding the attempted murder, stating he had no intention to kill and that the charge was based solely on the victim's testimony without supporting evidence. He acknowledged the arson charge and stated he would accept punishment for it.
