Man gets 27 years for murder and body disposal in Yangpyeong

A South Korean court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 27 years in prison for the murder and subsequent disposal of his acquaintance's body in Yangpyeong. The Seoul Northern District Court also ordered the man, identified as Seong, to wear a location tracking device for 15 years.

The defendant's actions, which included indiscriminately beating the victim and then strangling them when their physical condition was poor, were acts that could sufficiently foresee the possibility of death.

The court rejected Seong's defense that the victim died later than claimed and that he lacked intent to kill. Evidence, including the victim's movements, communication records, inconsistencies in Seong's statements, and the state of the body, led the court to conclude that the murder occurred on January 13th, not the following day as Seong claimed. The court found that Seong's actions, which included a severe assault followed by strangulation of the victim, demonstrated at least indirect intent to kill.

In its sentencing, the court cited the brutality of the crime, noting that Seong indiscriminately beat the victim before strangling him. The victim likely endured extreme suffering before death. The court also condemned Seong's actions after the murder, including dumping the body in the Namhangang River and attempting to conceal his crime for over six months. He even impersonated the victim via text messages to the victim's family from the victim's phone, while also deleting call logs and resetting the device.

The defendant attempted to conceal the crime by impersonating the victim and sending text messages to the bereaved family, trying to hide his crime forever.

Seong was accused of assaulting and strangling the 30-year-old man, identified as Lee, at his home in Seoul on January 14th. He then allegedly moved the body to his car and dumped it in the river in Yangpyeong. The victim's body was discovered on July 1st, half a year after the murder, and was identified through DNA analysis. The prosecution had sought a life sentence.
