Man gets 27 years for murder, body dumping; continued assault despite mother's pleas

A South Korean court has sentenced a man in his 30s to 27 years in prison for murder and the subsequent dumping of his victim's body near Dumulmeori in Yangpyeong County. The court revealed that the perpetrator, identified as Seong, continued his violent assault on the victim even after his mother intervened, pleading, "Stop, or the child will die." The victim also begged Seong to stop, saying, "Stop hitting me. I was wrong." Seong's mother eventually left the room, unable to stop the attack.

Following the murder, Seong allegedly told his mother not to be an accomplice and to pretend she knew nothing about the victim's death. He rejected her advice to surrender and even mentioned plans to flee overseas. Court documents also indicate that Seong repeatedly changed his account of the victim's time of death during the investigation and trial, making his statements unreliable.

The court noted Seong's focus on his potential release due to the expiration of his detention period and his attempts to reduce his sentence by changing the charge from murder to assault resulting in death. He also reportedly made mocking remarks about the victim and appeared to treat the crime lightly. The court emphasized that Seong showed more concern for the inconvenience caused to himself and others by media coverage than for guilt towards the victim and their family, concluding that he "showed no genuine remorse, justifying his actions."

In addition to the 27-year prison sentence, Seong was ordered to wear an electronic tracking device for 15 years. The court found him guilty of murder and body dumping based on the circumstances of the crime and his post-offense behavior.
