Man gets six months in jail for threatening girlfriend over gambling money

A man in his 40s has been sentenced to six months in prison for threatening his live-in girlfriend with a kitchen knife after she refused to give him money for gambling.

The incident took place in October last year at their Busan residence. The man, identified as Mr. A, allegedly grabbed a knife from the kitchen and threatened Ms. B, who is in her 60s, when she denied him funds for gambling. Reports indicate he was intoxicated at the time of the offense.

During the trial, Mr. A claimed he did not intend to threaten or intimidate Ms. B. However, the presiding judge, Lee Seong, dismissed his defense. The court considered the victim's testimony and other evidence, concluding that the threat was intentional. The judge emphasized Mr. A's history of similar violent offenses and his status as a repeat offender, stating that punishment commensurate with his guilt and the high risk of reoffending was unavoidable.
