Man hits wife with car on pedestrian crossing in Romania after conflict; bystanders intervene

Shocking scenes unfolded on a street in Galați, Romania, when a man intentionally struck his wife with his car as she was crossing the street. The incident occurred on August 17, 2026, on Oțelarilor Street, after the 42-year-old driver reportedly had a conflict with his 37-year-old wife.

From the first checks, the police established that a man, aged 42, from the municipality of Galați, on the background of an existing conflict with his wife, a 37-year-old woman, saw her while she was crossing the street, on the pedestrian crossing. In these circumstances, the man accelerated the car towards the woman, hitting her with the front-left part of the vehicle and projecting her onto the roadway.

According to police reports, the man accelerated his vehicle towards his wife as she was using the pedestrian crossing, hitting her with the front of his car and throwing her onto the road. He then continued driving, hitting a parked car, before returning to the scene where his wife lay injured. Several bystanders intervened and stopped him.

Subsequently, the driver continued his journey on Oțelarilor Street, towards Stadionului Street, where he hit a parked car outside the roadway, after which he returned to the pedestrian crossing, in the area where his wife was, where he was stopped by several passers-by.

Emergency services transported the injured woman to the hospital. Police tested the driver and found his blood alcohol content to be 0.57 mg/l in exhaled air. He was taken for biological sample collection to determine his exact blood alcohol level. Given the immediate risk to the woman, police issued a provisional protection order against her husband. Investigations are ongoing for domestic violence offenses.
