Man Investigated for Murder After Woman Found Hanged in Sicily Home

Authorities in Sicily are investigating a man for the potential murder of 33-year-old Noemi Impellizzeri, who was found hanged in her home in Riposto, Catania, on August 23. A fire also broke out in the residence.

The man under investigation, who is married with two children, claims he was a friend of Impellizzeri, not her boyfriend. He stated that he went to her house, found her dead, and instead of immediately contacting law enforcement, he called her relatives. He reported that he was called back late at night by the victim's mother, and they returned to the house where firefighters were already present.

I didn't call the police because I felt guilty for not believing her words about suicide. But I called all the relatives without getting a response, then her mother called me back and together we went to the house where the firefighters were working on the fire.

Prosecutors in Catania find his account questionable and have opened a murder investigation as a "necessary step to conduct unrepeatable assessments." The autopsy report did not yield a conclusive cause of death, leaving the possibility of multiple scenarios open.

Investigators have seized the man's mobile phone, which is crucial for corroborating his statement. He claimed that Impellizzeri contacted him on Friday night, expressing suicidal intentions and showing him a rope, mentioning she had learned how to tie knots from YouTube. He stated he did not believe her. The following day, he sent her several messages without a response. He claims he went to her house around 2 a.m. and discovered she had hanged herself.

Noemi Impellizzeri's funeral was held at the Basilica of San Pietro in Riposto, attended by a large crowd. Her family, including her mother, were present. Her mother expressed hope that the perpetrator would be brought to justice. Impellizzeri leaves behind three children, 14-year-old twins and a 12-year-old daughter, who are living with their maternal grandmother.

His lawyer, Ivan Siragusa, said, "My client is under investigation because he is identified as the person who had the last meetings with the deceased. He himself has asked investigators to acquire all surveillance footage from the area and movement data for proper verification. My client professes his absolute innocence; he is sorry and distressed."
