Man killed by train in Chlef, Algeria

A 37-year-old man was killed instantly after being struck by a passenger train on Thursday at 10:35 p.m. The incident occurred at kilometer marker 179+400 in Bir Saf Saf, within the Oued Fodda commune, east of Chlef, according to the Chlef civil protection services.

Emergency responders from the civil protection quickly intervened. They worked to evacuate the victim to the Oued Fodda medical-surgical unit after security services completed their initial investigation at the scene. The exact circumstances leading to the tragedy remain unknown.

The accident took place on the Algiers-Oran railway line, which passes through the Chlef province. This route has unfortunately seen similar accidents in the past. In an effort to eliminate dangerous level crossings, particularly in the provincial capital, the National Agency for Studies and Follow-up of Railway Investment Implementation (Anesrif) recently initiated work on three structures: a underpass, a tunnel, and an overpass.

While construction is underway for the underpass in Bensouna and the tunnel in Haï Meddahi, residents are eagerly awaiting the completion and final reception of the overpass project in Bouguellal, east of Chlef. This overpass project was launched in May 2025.
