Man killed in Barcelona street shooting, second incident in area in under a month

A man has died after being shot multiple times in the street in Barcelona's Sants-Montjuïc district. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday between Mineria and Mare de Déu del Port streets, in an area known as the Zona Franca.

Emergency services and police responded to the scene, where bystanders attempted to revive the victim. Despite their efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly after being shot. The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, are investigating the shooting and are actively searching for the assailant, who escaped immediately after the attack.

This fatal shooting marks the second in the same location within a short period. A similar incident occurred in mid-May when another man was killed by a gunshot to the head in the same street, with the perpetrator also fleeing the scene. The recurrence of violence has intensified concerns among residents about safety in the neighborhood, which is described as being plagued by insecurity and neglect.

The recent violence has drawn renewed attention to the issues of firearms, drug trafficking, and criminal gangs in Barcelona. The incidents also precede an upcoming visit by Pope Leo XIV to the city, which is expected to require a significant security presence.
