Man narrowly escapes tragedy in Mediaș after fuel-filled barrel explodes while he cuts it

A 71-year-old man from Mediaș was taken to hospital after a metal barrel containing fuel exploded while he was cutting it with an angle grinder.

The incident occurred on Decebal Street in Mediaș, Sibiu County, on Saturday, September 5. A fire engine and an ambulance from the Sibiu County Ambulance Service responded.

The man suffered burns to his face, chest and upper limbs. The Sibiu Ambulance Service said he had first- and second-degree burns and was transported to the Mediaș Emergency Reception Unit in stable condition after receiving first aid and being monitored.

The explosion involved a container holding gasoline, but it did not result in a fire, the ambulance service said. Sibiu emergency inspectorate spokesperson Raluca Marcu told Agerpres that the man had been cutting a metal barrel containing combustible liquid.

The Sibiu Ambulance Service responded with a type B crew in Mediaș, on Decebal Street, to an incident in which a container with gasoline exploded. The incident was not followed by a fire.
