Man sentenced to 40 years for killing father and nephew in Ecuador

A court in Esmeraldas has handed down the maximum sentence of 40 years in prison to a man convicted of the brutal double murder of his father and young nephew. The heinous crime occurred in March 2025 in Quinindé, where the convicted man, William José O. S., attacked his sleeping seven-year-old nephew with a machete, causing fatal injuries.

The accused will serve a sentence of 40 years of deprivation of liberty after the trial for the double crime perpetrated in the Santa Rosa precinct, of the Quinindé canton.

When the child's grandfather attempted to protect his grandson, the assailant inflicted a severe wound to the grandfather's face, severing his carotid artery and jugular vein, leading to his death from hemorrhage. The attacker also threatened other family members who managed to escape.

The wounds caused by the bladed weapon caused the dismemberment of the minor.

The Fiscalía presented compelling evidence, including expert testimonies and accounts from the victim's siblings, to secure the conviction for murder. The accused admitted to the attack on the child, claiming he mistook him for an "enemy" and was under the influence of substances at the time. The court also ordered the suspension of his political rights during his sentence.
