Man sentenced to 9.5 years for role in incident that killed two

A man has been sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison for his involvement in a violent incident that began with a stone thrown at a car and tragically ended with two fatalities. The sentence was handed down by the Oral Criminal and Correctional Court No. 3.

The incident occurred on April 11, 2025, when Leonardo Camarena, 43, was driving with his partner in Parque Chacabuco. Their Ford Fiesta was struck by a stone as they passed through the intersection of Castañares Avenue and Carabobo Street. Angered by the attack, Camarena changed his route and stopped to confront two men, identified as Matías Nahuel Pérez and an unidentified accomplice who remains at large.

A violent street fight ensued. During the confrontation, Pérez allegedly grabbed Camarena from behind while the other assailant stabbed him in the chest. Severely wounded, Camarena managed to return to his vehicle and attempted to drive away. However, he lost control of the car after only a few blocks, striking a woman who was waiting for a bus.

The out-of-control vehicle then crashed into a bakery at the corner of Cobo and Puán streets. Both Camarena and the woman, who was waiting for the line 133 bus, died from their injuries. Pérez was arrested about half an hour after the attack.

The prosecution successfully argued that Pérez was not merely a bystander but actively participated in the assault. Evidence, including surveillance footage from the Urban Monitoring Center, played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending Pérez shortly after the incident. The court found Pérez responsible for simple homicide.
