Man sentenced to life for premeditated murder of five in Indonesia

An Indonesian court has handed down a life sentence to Priyo Bagus Setiawan for the brutal premeditated murder of five family members in Indramayu. The sentence, delivered by the Indramayu District Court, surpasses the 20-year prison term prosecutors had recommended, reflecting the severity of the crime.

Presiding Judge Wimmy D Simarmata stated that Priyo was proven to have committed premeditated murder and violence against a child resulting in death. The court found that the defendant, along with Ririn Rifanto, meticulously planned the killings to acquire the victims' property. Evidence presented indicated that the five days leading up to the murders were used by Priyo to modify a hammer, devise methods to approach the victims, set the execution time, and prepare for the crime's execution.

The court also highlighted the close collaboration between Priyo and Ririn, encompassing the planning stages, the commission of the murders, the appropriation of the victims' belongings, the burial of all bodies in a single grave, and efforts to destroy evidence. Priyo's role was deemed critical, as he allegedly handed Ririn the hammer used to attack victim Budi Awaludin, 45, and personally drowned an infant victim in a bathroom tub.

Judge Simarmata emphasized that the defendant's actions were "decisive" in realizing the entire event. The court considered the profound impact of the crime, including the trauma inflicted on the community, the deep grief of the victims' families, and the violation of human values, given that all family members, including children, were targeted. The judge described the act as an "extraordinary crime," the most serious and reprehensible form of premeditated murder.

While Priyo received a life sentence, the verdict for the other defendant, Ririn Rifanto, has been postponed to July 8, as the judges deliberate further. The case has sent shockwaves through the community, underscoring the brutality and calculated nature of the crime.
