During the time he was carrying on an affair with the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, Banfield devised a plan to kill his wife. The plot included luring an unsuspecting man, Joseph Ryan, to the Banfield home with the intention of framing him for Christine's murder. This complex scheme ultimately led to Banfield's conviction.
