Man sentenced to seven years for assaulting 4-year-old while on probation

A man in Taiwan has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl, an offense committed while he was already on probation for a previous sex crime. The court handed down the sentence after considering the gravity of the crime, the victim's tender age, and the defendant's persistent criminal behavior.

The incident took place last September when the girl's father, who was busy with work, entrusted his daughter to the care of the man, a friend. While the father was away, the man sexually assaulted the child, resulting in minor injuries to her urinary tract.

Upon discovering the assault, the father took his daughter to the hospital for examination, reported the incident to the police, and filed charges. The accused confessed to the crime during police questioning, investigations by the prosecutor's office, and court proceedings. Notably, he had previously received a one-year and seven-month sentence with a four-year probation period in 2022 for a similar offense, making his new crime a clear violation of his probation.

The judge emphasized that the defendant betrayed the trust placed in him by the victim's father to care for the child. Instead of protecting her, he exploited her for his own desires, causing irreparable psychological and physical trauma. The court found no mitigating factors, especially since the victim's family explicitly requested a severe sentence and the defendant showed no remorse, leading to the heavy punishment.
