Man shot dead in Lyon suburb

A man was shot dead while sitting behind the wheel of his parked car in Vaulx-en-Velin, in the Lyon suburbs, on Friday night. One or more unidentified attackers opened fire from another vehicle after pulling alongside him, then fled.

The victim was struck by at least one bullet in the chest at around 11 p.m., according to a source close to the investigation. The shooting took place near a large flea market in a working-class neighborhood of Vaulx-en-Velin.

Very little else is known about the victim or the circumstances of the killing. Investigators are working to establish what happened, and no connection has yet been made between this homicide and drug trafficking.

The Lyon metropolitan area, particularly several eastern suburbs including Vaulx-en-Velin, has regularly seen killings and attempted killings linked to territorial conflicts between criminal gangs involved in the drug trade. At least six narcotics-related murders have been recorded in the area since the beginning of 2026. That figure does not include three people who had no connection to the criminal milieu and died in an arson attack on a building in Décines-Charpieu on May 11.
