Man with grenade arrest killed months after release

A man with a history of arrests, including one for possessing a grenade and pistol ammunition, was fatally shot while sitting in a car with his partner. The incident occurred on Saturday in Los Olivos, just months after his release from prison.

Sergio Jean Franco Zenosain Corazón, 34, had been apprehended in September 2025 with a "pineapple" type grenade, two cell phones, a Glock pistol magazine, and 9mm ammunition in the same vehicle he was killed in. Despite these previous arrests, he was released, only to be gunned down eleven months later.

Police are investigating the shooting as a potential "ajuste de cuenta," or settling of scores, a common motive in targeted killings. Surveillance cameras are being reviewed to identify the two assailants who escaped on a motorcycle. The killing highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of the justice system.

Official figures indicate a persistent rate of contract killings in Peru. During the first half of 2026, over 130 contract killings linked to "sicariato" (hired assassination) were reported, averaging more than 20 per month. Additionally, between January and July, more than 175 attacks related to criminality and extortion occurred in Lima Metropolitana and Callao, contributing to alarming statistics on citizen insecurity.
