Mancini returns to coach Italy national football team

Roberto Mancini is back at the helm of the Italian national football team, embarking on a second tenure as coach. The Italian Football Federation announced the decision Tuesday, with Giovanni Malagò, the federation's president, revealing the news at a press conference.

Claudio Ranieri has also been appointed as the technical director, replacing Paolo Maldini. Maldini had reportedly threatened to resign if either Mancini or Antonio Conte were given the coaching job. "I saw that the person who should become the national team coach... is Roberto Mancini," Malagò stated. "Claudio Ranieri gave his approval just a few minutes ago. Today we have a new coach and a new technical director."

Mancini, 61, previously managed Italy from 2018 to 2023, leading them to the Euro 2020 title. His immediate challenge is to revitalize a squad that has failed to qualify for the last three World Cups. He unexpectedly resigned in the summer of 2023, reportedly accepting an offer from Saudi Arabia, at a time when Italy was struggling in its Euro 2024 qualifiers.

The return of the former Manchester City and Inter Milan manager comes after Andrea Pirlo withdrew his candidacy for the coaching position. Pirlo announced Monday he was no longer a contender, facing criticism for an advertising deal with a Russian betting company and questions about his coaching experience. Pirlo's withdrawal reportedly led to resignations from Maldini and his advisor Leonardo, who had favored Thiago Motta for the role.
