Manga 'Space Brothers' to Create Art in Space via Robotic Arm

The beloved Japanese manga "Space Brothers," which concluded its 19-year serialization in June, is venturing into uncharted territory with a unique project titled "Mission: SPACE COMIC." This initiative aims to bring the creative process truly into orbit by transmitting the artist's digital brushstrokes to the International Space Station (ISS).

In collaboration with the digital art software "CLIP STUDIO PAINT," the project will leverage the "Kibo" Japanese experiment module on the ISS. A robotic arm within the module will receive the data of manga artist Chūya Koyama's unique strokes and recreate them in the microgravity environment. This endeavor seeks to explore the possibilities of remote drawing technology and its fusion with advanced space capabilities.

"Space Brothers," created by Koyama, has captivated readers since its debut in 2007 with its story of brothers Mutta and Hibito Namba pursuing their dreams of becoming astronauts. The manga has garnered critical acclaim, including the Shogakukan Manga Award and the Kodansha Manga Award, and has sold over 35 million copies worldwide. It has previously been adapted into an anime series and a live-action film.

The "Mission: SPACE COMIC" project is a multi-company collaboration that will transmit data between Earth and the ISS. The robotic arm's drawing will be a testament to the integration of digital creation tools and space technology. The final visual work is scheduled for public release on July 22, promising a novel experience for fans and a significant moment in the history of comic creation.
