Manhunt begins as gunmen kill two police officers in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for assailants responsible for the deaths of two police officers. The officers were ambushed and fatally shot along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in the Orumba South Local Government Area.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu issued the directive during an emergency security meeting, emphasizing the urgency of apprehending the perpetrators. The attack occurred Sunday night as the officers were returning from an assignment in a convoy operation. The convoy reportedly included that of Chief Ben Nwankwo, the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who was returning from a function.

While Governor Soludo's Chief of Staff escaped the attack unharmed, other civilians in the entourage sustained injuries during the ensuing gun battle, which eyewitnesses described as lasting several minutes. The assailants, who had positioned themselves in a nearby bush, opened fire as the convoy approached, causing panic in surrounding communities.

One tricycle rider, who was returning from Ezira, recounted hearing intense gunshots and immediately abandoning his vehicle to seek safety. Upon returning after the shooting subsided, he discovered the two lifeless police officers on the road beside their patrol van. A video circulating online showed the scene, with a voice calling for official attention.

CP Orutugu confirmed the incident, stating that the command is actively investigating and taking necessary actions. He stressed the demand for immediate results in apprehending those responsible, asserting the police's readiness to protect the people of Anambra State and ensure justice for the slain officers.
