Maradona death trial: Hospital admits 'error' over use of father's medical records

An investigation into a potential criminal offense is underway after a significant error was discovered in the medical records used to analyze the death of football legend Diego Armando Maradona. The Sanatorio de los Arcos, owned by Swiss Medical, has acknowledged a mistake where medical data belonging to Maradona's father was erroneously included in the analysis of the star's case.

Prosecutors Carolina Asprella and Cecilia Chaieb are leading the criminal probe. Following a request from senior prosecutors, judges ordered searches at the headquarters of Swiss Medical and the Sanatorio de los Arcos. Police investigators from the Province of Buenos Aires and the City Police executed these searches, which began late Thursday and concluded early Friday.

During the operation at Swiss Medical's headquarters, the head of the legal department reportedly stated that no medical records for Diego Armando Maradona were held there, asserting all records were at the treatment facility. At the Sanatorio de la Trinidad, however, health center officials provided clarifications regarding the registration error. They admitted that laboratory data for Diego Maradona's father was entered into the database under the name Diego Armando Maradona, leading to confusion about which patient the results belonged to.

Judicial sources informed La Nación that police also seized documentation related to a medical intervention Maradona underwent in August 2014. However, no other laboratory analysis records were found for the period between 2011 and 2015, except for those connected to that specific intervention. The revelation of the medical record mix-up was initially made by the defense attorneys for Nancy Forlini, a medical coordinator at Swiss Medical and one of the individuals facing charges in the Maradona death trial.
