Marcelo Lombardero bids farewell to National Opera Company

Stage director Marcelo Lombardero has announced his departure from the National Opera Company (CNO), citing a divergence in how the institution's direction and duties are understood. In a Facebook post, Lombardero expressed gratitude and tranquility, stating, "Sometimes, paths separate when the way of understanding the destiny and duty of an institution ceases to be shared."

Lombardero, who assumed the artistic direction in November 2024, reflected on his time with the company. "I take with me the learning, the affection of great colleagues, and the privilege of having gone through this experience," he wrote. He also expressed his enduring love for Mexico, calling it his home, and affirmed his commitment to new challenges with the same passion.

His tenure at the CNO included notable productions such as Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto" and Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's "Ascent and Fall of the City of Mahagonny." The announcement follows weeks of rumors regarding his potential departure from the artistic directorship.

Born in Entre Ríos, Argentina, Lombardero's departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the CNO. He emphasized his continued passion for the arts and his intention to remain connected to Mexico's cultural scene.
