Marileidy Paulino's record-breaking 400m win amid rain delights Dominican crowd

Amidst a torrential downpour, Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino delivered a stunning performance to win the 400 meters at the Central American and Caribbean Games, clocking a new Games record of 48.94 seconds.

The stadium roared as Paulino, nicknamed 'the gazelle of Don Gregorio,' dominated the race, seemingly unfazed by the heavy rain. Cuban rival Roxana Gómez finished second with a time of 49.99 seconds, but Paulino ran alone against the clock and the storm, captivating the crowd.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, over 30,000 spectators remained in the stands, drenched but enthusiastic, chanting Paulino's name. After crossing the finish line, a jubilant Paulino, draped in the Dominican flag, shared her emotions.

"I am very excited to be able to run before the Dominican people," Paulino said, her voice filled with adrenaline. "They deserve everything, and this race was entirely for them." She also spoke about her rivalry with Gómez, calling her a "great athlete" and a "sister in sport," whom she always tries to help improve her times.

Paulino expressed profound gratitude to the spectators who braved the rain. "Thank you, because the rain didn't stop them," she stated. "I think running like this, with this water and with that energy from the people, evokes the best emotions an athlete can feel on a track."
