Marlins Turn Triple Play After 8,752 Days, Still Lose to Astros, Extend Losing Streak to 8

The Miami Marlins suffered their eighth consecutive loss, falling 5-3 to the Houston Astros on Tuesday, despite executing a rare triple play in the late innings. The defeat means the Marlins have yet to secure a win since the All-Star break.

Houston's Jeremy Peña ignited the offense with a leadoff home run in the first inning. The Astros extended their lead in the second inning with an RBI double by Lucas Spence, marking his first Major League RBI. While the Marlins managed to score a run in the fifth inning via an RBI hit from Kyle Stowers, Houston quickly responded.

Isaac Paredes of the Astros hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning, widening the gap. The Marlins showed some resilience when Joe Mack hit a two-run homer in the seventh, but it wasn't enough. The highlight for Miami came in the bottom of the eighth inning when a ground ball to third base resulted in an "out-out-out" triple play (5-4-3).

According to data expert Sarah Langs, this was the Marlins' first triple play in 8,752 games, dating back to July 28, 2002. It was only the second triple play in the team's history. However, the impressive defensive play failed to energize the team's offense.

In the ninth inning, Astros closer Josh Hader shut down the Marlins for his 11th save of the season, sealing the victory. On the pitching front, Astros starter T.J. McFarland pitched six innings, striking out eight and allowing only one run, earning his sixth win. For the Marlins, starter Tyler Phillips took the loss, his fifth, after giving up three runs in 4.1 innings.
