Mass dismissals at Segegob spark official alarm and union protest

A wave of mass dismissals is causing alarm among officials at the Ministry General Secretariat of Government (Segegob). Reports from employees describe a widespread layoff process, with messages circulating stating "everyone was fired" and "all departments without people." Union sources estimate that several dozen workers have been affected by these sudden terminations, which began on Wednesday afternoon.

The National Association of Officials of the Ministry General Secretariat of Government (Anfusegg) has formally expressed its rejection of these dismissals. The association claims the process is marred by serious irregularities. These include the delivery of termination notices at the beginning of the month, arbitrary restrictions on employees' use of legal holidays or compensatory time off, and a lack of consideration for staff with over five years of service.

We express our rejection of the dismissals, which fall - it states - a series of serious irregularities in the conduct of the authorities, as there is delivery of notices at the beginning of the month, arbitrary impediments to making use of legal holidays or compensatory hours, and a lack of consideration towards the trajectory of officials with more than five years of service.

Anfusegg has initiated discussions with the chief of staff for the ministry, who also serves as the Minister of the Interior, Claudio Alvarado, following the departure of Mara Sedini. A working group has been established to review the dismissals. Concurrently, the association is coordinating a collective legal defense for those affected. They are urgently calling on any employee receiving a termination notice to refuse to sign any documents and to contact the association immediately.

The recent cabinet change in May did not involve alterations to the Segegob undersecretary position, which is held by independent official José Francisco Lagos, who is administratively responsible for the ministry. The ongoing dismissals raise significant concerns about the ministry's operational capacity and the treatment of its workforce.
