Massive Fire Engulfs London Waste Centre, Disrupting Rail Services

A major fire erupted at a waste facility on Landmann Way in Bermondsey, south-east London, prompting a large-scale response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB). Approximately 100 firefighters and fifteen fire engines were dispatched to the scene shortly before 8:00 PM BST on Tuesday.

The fire involved about 50 tonnes of household waste, generating a substantial amount of smoke. The LFB issued a warning to local residents, advising them to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution. Station Commander Duncan Rees described the challenging conditions crews were working under to bring the fire under control, utilizing large ladders to combat the flames from above.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, although firefighters had previously tackled a blaze at the same facility in June. The LFB anticipates a "protracted incident," with crews expected to work through the night to manage the situation. The scale of the operation suggests a significant commitment to extinguishing the blaze and preventing further spread.

In addition to the immediate firefighting efforts, the fire has impacted local transportation. Rail services heading into London Bridge from New Cross have been affected, with National Rail warning of potential cancellations, severe delays of up to 100 minutes, or revised services. This disruption highlights the wider consequences of the incident beyond the immediate area of the fire.
