‘Massive’ Ukrainian drone attack on Russia kills at least six, says Moscow

Ukraine executed one of its most extensive drone assaults on Russia, resulting in a significant fire at a Wildberries distribution warehouse near Moscow and claiming at least six lives, according to Russian officials. The Russian defense ministry stated it downed 822 drones, while Moscow's mayor reported 600 drones targeted the capital region, with 201 intercepted.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the raid as the largest air attack on the Russian capital in two years. This escalation underscores Ukraine's rapidly growing drone capabilities, potentially making it the largest wave of attacks since the war's commencement in 2022. The assault on the Wildberries warehouse in Podolsk, south of Moscow, created a large blaze, with images showing thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

Andrey Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, characterized the assault as "one of the most massive drone attacks in recent memory." The Russian defense ministry later claimed to have shot down nine Ukrainian cruise missiles and 1,478 drones within a 24-hour period, though these figures could not be independently verified. This offensive demonstrates Ukraine's enhanced long-range strike capabilities, now enabling attacks on targets up to 1,500 miles from its border.

Kyiv has increasingly focused on disrupting Russia's economy by targeting facilities like Wildberries, a company widely used for online retail. In the past month, Ukrainian forces have struck approximately 20 warehouses and buildings associated with the company, aiming to inflict financial damage on Russia and affect ordinary citizens. The attacks have also extended to other regions, with five reported deaths in Russia's southern Rostov region and one in the Moscow area. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukraine resulted in casualties in the Sumy border region and elsewhere, with a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv injuring six people.
