Mateta Wins UEFA Conference League for Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace has secured their first-ever European trophy, triumphing 1-0 over Rayo Vallecano in the UEFA Conference League final. The decisive goal came from striker Jean-Philippe Mateta early in the second half, following up on a rebound from Adam Wharton's shot.

The win provides a historic conclusion to the tenure of outgoing manager Oliver Glasner, who also led the club to FA Cup and Community Shield victories during his two-and-a-half-year spell. Both Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano were competing in their maiden European final, contributing to a cagey opening at Leipzig's Red Bull Arena.

Rayo Vallecano had the clearer chances in the first half, with Alemao and Unai Lopez both testing the Palace defense. However, Crystal Palace came closest just before the break when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide from an Adam Wharton pass.

Mateta's goal, his 16th of the season, came just six minutes into the second half after Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla could only parry Wharton's strike. Despite late pressure from Rayo, who notably operate with the lowest budget in Spain's La Liga, Crystal Palace held on for the historic victory.
