Matisse Works Recovered After Art Heist

Eight engravings by the renowned French artist Henri Matisse, collectively valued at around 1.9 million Swedish kronor (approximately $180,000 USD), have been recovered following a sophisticated art heist. The artworks were stolen last year from the Mário de Andrade Library in São Paulo, Brazil.

The theft, which occurred in December 2023, saw perpetrators overpower a security guard and an elderly couple visiting the library. They then accessed a glass display case containing the artworks and fled with the valuable pieces. In addition to the Matisse engravings, five works by the celebrated Brazilian artist Candido Portinari were also taken, though these remain missing.

Brazilian police have made progress in the investigation, arresting a man in April who is suspected of masterminding the heist. Authorities have now located the stolen Matisse works in a residence in São Bernardo, leading to the arrest of the individual found in possession of the art. The recovery represents a significant success for law enforcement in tracking down stolen cultural assets.
