Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char has responded to intimidation tactics that led to the temporary closure of some businesses in Barranquilla and Soledad. The mayor assured citizens that authorities are working collaboratively to counter threats that have generated fear among merchants and street vendors.

The situation became evident early Saturday, with several small shops and businesses in the southeastern sectors of Barranquilla and in neighborhoods of Soledad remaining closed. This occurred despite reinforced police patrols and official calls for normal activity.

Fear spread following the circulation of messages via WhatsApp and pamphlets on social media. These messages, from unknown sources, threatened those who did not comply with a supposed order to close. The origin and authorship of these messages are currently under investigation.

I am aware of the concern generated by the intimidations of a criminal group against merchants and street vendors. I want to assure you that we are working intensely and coordinated with metropolitan and departmental authorities to guarantee the security of all our citizens.

In response to the tension, Char took to social media, acknowledging the existing concern among residents. "Barranquilleros, today I want to tell you that, despite the threats from criminal groups, we continue to work tirelessly for your security, tranquility, and confidence," the mayor stated. He specifically addressed the impact on merchants and street vendors, assuring them that metropolitan and departmental authorities are intensely coordinating efforts to guarantee everyone's safety.

Char issued a strong message against those behind the intimidation, declaring, "We will not allow those who seek to sow terror to alter the tranquility of our territory."
