Mayor Deploys Extra Police Patrols Amidst Youth Nuisance in Sint-Pieters-Leeuw

The center of Negenmanneke, within Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Belgium, is grappling with persistent nuisance caused by groups of young people congregating in the area. Residents have lodged complaints detailing loud gatherings occurring late into the evening and music disrupting the neighborhood's peace.

It involves typical reports that we receive during the summer months. Some of the young people are just hanging around and not doing anything wrong. That is also allowed. But another part does cause nuisance.

Mayor Jan Desmeth acknowledged that while the behavior does not always constitute criminal offenses, it significantly disturbs the local community. He noted that such issues are common during summer months, with some youths merely loitering while others actively cause disturbances. The primary complaints revolve around excessive noise after 10 p.m. and loud music, which, while not criminal, is a source of considerable annoyance.

In response, the local police are increasing their presence in the Negenmanneke area. Mayor Desmeth stated that patrols will be conducted more frequently, employing both visible and undercover tactics. The aim is to create a deterrent effect on individuals whose behavior disrupts the community.

We are shifting up a gear and will have the police patrol the area both visibly and anonymously.

Further complaints include reports of young people playing football among parked cars, raising concerns about potential damage. Desmeth emphasized that while loitering is permissible, maintaining quiet after 10 p.m. is expected. The municipality hopes that the intensified police presence will yield swift results and restore tranquility to the area within the next two weeks.
