Mayor Hou Yu-ih jokes about candidate's election fatigue, calls it 'self-inflicted'

New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih lightened the mood at a grassroots construction supervision meeting by commenting on the intense election campaign. He recounted how New Taipei City Councilor Chiang Yi-chen, who is also the campaign office director for a rival candidate, complained of being exhausted, even more so than when she ran for councilor.

"You brought this upon yourself," Hou told Chiang, who was seated next to rival candidate for New Taipei City mayor, Su Chiao-hui. Su responded with frequent shrugs, creating an amusing interaction. Hou, who is running for re-election, shared his own experiences, noting that his current mayoral race is his fifth election in five years, all major contests.

She said she is almost dead from exhaustion, even more tired than when she was running for councilor. You asked for this, didn't you? You'd be tired if you chose this yourself.

Hou also reflected on his political journey, from a grassroots police officer to National Police Agency director and then mayor. He acknowledged the difficulties of public service, where good deeds often go unnoticed while mistakes draw criticism. He mentioned that City Councilor Cho Chun-ting often criticizes him, yet they can still be friendly.

Looking ahead, Hou mused about his post-retirement plans, emphasizing the importance of friendship and living life according to his own desires. He expressed a desire to pursue meaningful activities and things he wants to do, having made many compromises over the years. His remarks were met with applause from local leaders.
