Mazatlán Civil Protection coordinator and aide shot; calls grow for police chief’s resignation

Mazatlán’s Civil Protection coordinator, Oscar Roberto Osuna Tirado, and one of his aides were shot while traveling to a meeting of the city’s security coordination group. Both survived and remain stable in a hospital under security protection.

The attack took place on Gutiérrez Nájera Avenue, where the official vehicle carrying the two municipal employees sustained several bullet impacts. Emergency workers stabilized the victims before taking them to the hospital.

Moisés Ríos Pérez, secretary of Mazatlán’s municipal government, said the city had activated assistance protocols for the two officials and their families. He said authorities had no information that either man had received threats related to his work and expressed hope that the state prosecutor’s office would soon determine the motive.

The shooting also prompted a political demand for accountability. Maribel Chollet Morán, a Mazatlán council member and president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party’s state committee in the city, called for the dismissal of Public Security Secretary Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdez. She said the attack, carried out near the Fourth Naval Zone just minutes before the security meeting, represented a direct challenge to authorities and showed that security operations had failed. Chollet urged the interim mayor to review the police chief’s performance, saying the port was experiencing a real war.
