Mbah increases ESUT subvention to ₦276 million, begs ASUU to suspend strike

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has significantly boosted financial support for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), approving an additional ₦115 million monthly subvention. This substantial increase raises the state government's total monthly funding for the institution from ₦161 million to ₦276 million.

Governor Mbah has demonstrated once again that his administration places the welfare of workers and the uninterrupted education of our young people at the heart of its priorities.

The announcement, made by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Chidiebere Onyia, also included a direct appeal to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at ESUT. Governor Mbah urged the union to suspend its ongoing strike and return to academic activities, assuring that all outstanding grievances would be addressed through constructive dialogue.

This additional ₦115 million monthly intervention is a substantial commitment of public resources aimed at strengthening ESUT and ensuring that the institution can meet its obligations to its staff and students.

This latest financial injection marks a considerable commitment from the state government. Since February 2026, the cumulative increase in monthly subvention to ESUT has reached ₦140 million. Previously, the university received ₦136 million monthly. In February, an additional ₦25 million was allocated specifically to the ESUT College of Medicine to support the hiring of 120 new staff members, bringing the total to ₦161 million before this latest increase.

We appeal to ASUU-ESUT to reciprocate this gesture by resuming academic activities, while all outstanding issues are addressed through constructive dialogue.

SSG Onyia emphasized that the additional funding is designed to strengthen ESUT's capacity to meet its financial obligations, particularly concerning staff salaries and student services, thereby ensuring the continued delivery of quality education. He stated that Governor Mbah's administration prioritizes the welfare of workers and the uninterrupted education of young people. The governor urged ASUU-ESUT to reciprocate the government's gesture by resuming academic activities, stressing that students should not suffer the consequences of disagreements that can be resolved amicably.
